American Classical Mahogany Sofa Table, mid-19th c., Egyptian marble top, ogee frieze, waisted octagonal standards, shaped stretcher, scrolled feet, casters, h. 29 1/2 in., w. 46 3/4 in., 21 1/2 in. Note: Several design elements of this sofa table, including the Egyptian marble top, ogee freeze, waisted octagonal supports, and scrolled feet, closely relate to a labeled example made by John B. Ashmead of Philadelphia, sold in these rooms January 31, 2015 as lot 189. Ashmead was active as a cabinetmaker from about 1828 to 1855. There are several surviving examples of his furniture bearing either a stenciled or printed paper label, including a work table in the collection of the Winterthur Museum, Wilmington, Delaware, and a fold-top breakfast table that sold in these rooms on December 7, 2002 as lot 171.
