Description:

American Federal Carved Mahogany Sofa, early 19th c., New York, paneled crest rail centered by a carved bowknot and wheat motif, scrolled arms, reeded tapered legs, casters, h. 37 1/2 in., l. 77 1/2 in., d. 21 1/2 in. Provenance: The Stanley Weiss Collection, Providence, RI. Note: The Sheraton-influenced scroll-back sofa form can be traced to The London Chair-Makers’ and Carvers’ Book of Prices for Workmanship published in 1802 and was subsequently implemented by prominent New York cabinetmakers such as Duncan Phyfe and his contemporary Michael Allison. The sofa offered here features a nearly identical overall form and carved crest rail decoration as a Phyfe sofa in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and an Allison sofa in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago.
