Description:

American Federal Mahogany Linen Press, early 19th c., Philadelphia, reeded edge top, two drawers over paneled doors, interior with four linen trays, reeded stiles, turned feet, h. 55 1/2 in., w. 49 in., d. 25 in. Note: Following the Haitian Revolution in 1791, a number of émigré cabinet makers arrived in North America bringing French and Caribbean carpentry techniques. Most notable in Philadelphia were Jean Baptiste Laurent and Charles Domballe, who made pieces for financier Stephen Girard (1750-1831). The cabinet offered here, of French commode form with Louis XVI turned legs, has pine and poplar secondary woods, likely indicating a Philadelphia manufacture by a French-trained cabinet maker, much like the Girard Collection examples.
