Description:

American Folk School, 20th c., "Naknek, Alaska", oil on canvas, unsigned, titled upper left, label reading "Anon. Amer. Primitive, Naknek, Alaska, (c. 1910)" en verso, 19 7/8 in. x 32 1/2 in., framed.

  • Notes: Note: Located on the bank of the Naknek River in the Bristol Bay, the tiny fishing village of Naknek is southwest of Anchorage and was settled 6,000 years ago by Yup'ik Eskimos and Athabascan Indians. First recorded in 1821 by Captain Lt. Vasiliev as Naugeik, the area was populated by fur-trappers and eventually occupied by a Russian fort. In the 1880s it was called Kinuyak, and finally became known by its current name due to a misspelling by the Russian Navy. Naknek is known for its abundant salmon fishing. 1890 marked the opening date of the village's first cannery, and within a decade there were more than a dozen in Bristol Bay, making the town a leading regional fishery. This charming image depicts an Alaskan summer scene, with an abundance of fishing boats taking in the daily catch. Canneries re faintly visible along the shore.
