American Folk School, early 19th c., 'Portrait of a Gentleman', oil on canvas, unsigned, 1830s-1840s, 42 in. x 35 in., in an antique gilt frame. Provenance: Hollywood Hills, California. Note: This charming folk art painting depicts a seated gentleman in an interior, probably his home, with a striking red curtain in the background. Perhaps the most remarkable and delightful aspect of the portrait is his exuberant hairstyle. The painting bears a similarity to work of the Maine naive portrait painter Jonas Holman (1805-1873).
