Description:

An American Gothic Carved Rosewood Armoire, c. 1850, gothicized cornice, paneled doors, plinth base with two short drawers, demilune feet, height 94 in., width 73 in., depth 26 in Note: The armoire form, infrequently documented the eastern seaboard in the late colonial and early Federal periods, appeared often in New York after the War of 1812, initially from the shops of French-Emigre cabinetmakers. The armoire form had continuity in Francophone Louisiana. Southerners were very receptive to New York armoires in the 1830's, such as that offered here. This armoire retains the bold geometry of the Grecian style with an incrustation of Gothic surface ornament and elaborate ripple molding, resulting distinctively American creation.
