An American Gothic Carved Rosewood and Mahogany Corner Cabinet Étagère, c. 1850, orb finial, pierced back with two shelves over a chamfered cabinet with mirror glazed tracery doors flanked by applied turnings, height 76 in., width 27 in., depth 19 in Note: This cabinet is very similar to five documented examples, including one conserved at the Brooklyn Museum (acc. 52.134); one at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (acc. 82.16); a pair at the Detroit Institute of Arts (acc. 2002.1.1-2), and one with antiquarian Stuart Feld. Scholar Stephen Harrison notes a design precedent for these American cabinets in Michel Jansen's Ouvrage Sur L'Ebenisterie 1839-1842. Reference: Feld.
