An American Late Classical Carved Walnut Armoire, mid-19th c., New Orleans, massive ogee cornice over molded doors, shelf interior with medial belt of drawers, ogee bracket feet, height 93 1/2 in., width 73 in., depth 28 in. Provenance: Barrow/Brandon/Bedgood House at Greenwood Plantation Pinckneyville, MS. Note: The massive cornice, case construction, wide door stiles, medial belt of drawers, and ogee bracket feet on this armoire are typical within a group of armoires made in New Orleans. A free-man-of-color Jean Rousseau (Haiti/New Orleans, active 1810-1837), trained thirty apprentices between 1813 and 1833, notable among them was Dutreuil Barjon (b. 1799). Reference: Moscou.
