Description:

American Peachblow Glass Morgan Vase, c. 1890, possibly New England Glass Company, Cambridge, MA; agata pattern body on frosted amber five dragon base, overall h. 10 in. Provenance: The Service Collection, Estate of Grant A. Oakes, Warren, OH. Note: On March 8, 1886, a Chinese porcelain vase with the "peach blow" shading, a highly sought-after red to yellow glaze, from the collection of Mary J. Morgan, wife of Charles Morgan (1795-1878), a transportation tycoon and a cousin of J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), sold at auction for the astounding sum of $18,000 (more than $450,000 today). This notable art world event inspired American glass firms, such as New England Glass Co. and Hobbs, Brockunier & Co., to manufacture replicas of the Morgan vase for the middle-class market. The lot presented here with a unique “agata” finish is one of the Morgan vase replicas produced during the late 19th century.
