An American Rococo Carved Rosewood Etagere, mid-19th c., New York, arched crest with shield cartouche and urn finials; shaped mirror back flanked by serpentine shelves, pierced supports, serpentine rouge marble top above a foliate drawer over door; tapered and fluted serpentine shelves, conforming base, disc feet, height 102 in., width 55 in., depth 20 in Note: The arched bonnet top, bracket supports, reticulated tablet shelf backs and serpentine case on this etagere are indicative of a number of New York firms including J. & J.W. Meeks. The strapwork details on the crest and cabinet door appliques are harbingers of Renaissance Revival modes which succeeded the Rococo style. A rosewood etagere nearly identical to the lot here was sold in these rooms as lot 816 on October 6, 1998.
