Description:

Very Rare American Rococo Carved Rosewood Sofa and Armchair, c. 1850-1860, New York, reticulated finely carved and latticework crest rail, shaped arms, carved serpentine seat rail, cabriole legs, casters, sofa h. 44 1/2 in., w. 76 1/2 in., d. 27 in.; armchair h. 41 1/2 in., w. 25 in., d. 20 in. Note: The very fine and robust carving of the sofa and armchair in this lot can be attributed to New York cabinetmakers such as John Henry Belter, J. & J.W. Meeks, and Alexander Roux. Interestingly, the only New York cabinetmaker known to incorporate distinctive latticework is Alexander Roux, whose examples of Rococo seated furniture are rare.
