Note : This portrait depicts medical practitioner Albert John Ochsner, a leader in the development of modern surgical techniques and a founding member of the American College of Surgeons, of which he was president, 1923-24 Born on April 3, 1858 in Wisconsin, he spent much of his professional life in Chicago. He attended the University of Wisconsin in 1881 and completed the four year course in three years, graduating with honors and a B.S. He decided to pursue a career in medicine and received his degree from Rush Medical College of Chicago in 1886 Among his many honors, he served as President of the Clinical Congress of Surgeons of North America 1920-12; the American Surgical Association, 1924; and as editor of the journal Surgery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics. Ochsner played the role of mentor to his younger cousin, Dr. Alton Ochsner (1896-1981), who followed in his footsteps. Clinics in several cities including New Orleans still bear the Ochsner name."
