Description:

American School, 19th c., "The Village Festival", oil on canvas, unsigned, 21 in. x 34 in., framed.

  • Notes: Note: This intriguing painting depicts a jovial outdoor village scene. Although an American painting, the scene illustrated here suggests the imagery of 16th century Netherlandish artist Pieter Bruegel, including the purposefully skewed perspective of the buildings and landscape, and the drunken merriment of the people. Additionally, the palette of greens and browns with bright reds interspersed is one that Bruegel often used. In fact, The Village Festival calls to mind Bruegel's painting, Netherlandish Proverbs, which depicts a similarly raucous scene meant to teach the viewer a valuable lesson.
