Description:

American School, 19th c., "Portrait of Mrs. Clement Biddle Penrose, née Anne Howard Bingham (1778-1820)", oil on canvas, unsigned, handwritten label identifying sitter en verso, 29 3/4 in. x 24 3/4 in., antique gilt frame. Note: In 1796, Anne Howard Bingham, the daughter of Major Charles Bingham and Anne Howard, married Clement Biddle Penrose, the son of James Penrose and Sarah Biddle. Sarah Biddle’s sister, Anne Owen Biddle, was married to General James Wilkinson of Pointe Celeste plantation; it is thought that this connection helped secure Clement Biddle Penrose an appointment as a land commissioner for the Louisiana Territory in 1805. The family moved to St. Louis in that year and remained in contact with their Louisiana relatives. In 1830, the couple’s son, Clement Biddle Penrose, Jr. married Ann Wilkinson, the granddaughter of General James Wilkinson.
