American School, 19th century., 'Cliff House and Seal Rock, near San Francisco', oil on canvas, unsigned, 26 in. x 40 in., in an ornate period giltwood frame. E2500-3500 Note: Built in 1863, Cliff House overlooked the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean and famed Seal Rock on the San Francisco Peninsula. The popular seaside resort hosted three Presidents and prominent California families including the Hearsts and Stanfords. In 1881, Cliff House was sold to Adolph Sutro, a self-made millionaire and future mayor of San Francisco, who built a railway that connected to the downtown cable car system, bringing the public to the resort area. On Christmas day of 1894, Cliff House was destroyed by fire.
