  • Notes: Note: In 1937, the Southern Negro Youth Congress was established by young people who had attended the1936 National Negro Congress in Chicago and wanted to implement its call for action. These young leaders, including veteran activists James Jackson, Edward Strong, Helen Gray and Esther Cooper, gathered in Richmond, Virginia, and formed the first headquarters of SNYC. In 1939, the organization would move its headquarters to Birmingham, Alabama.
