American School, c. 1825, "Portrait of Captain John Mountfort, d. 1815, First Commander of Fort Pike", oil on canvas, unsigned 36 in. x 29 in., original oak frame, (note: Captain John Mountfort took control of Fort Pike of Louisiana in 1827. Throughout much of this appointment, Mountfort and the men of Company G contended with its unfinished construction of the Fort. Built upon the wetlands surrounding Lake Pontchartrain, the "foundation literally rested upon a wooden raft or grillage, constructed of one foot square cypress logs to keep the fort from sinking into the ooze of the lake".1 In November of 1836 Captain John Mountfort and part of Company G left Fort Pike for Florida, to fight in the Seminole Wars.
