American School, early 19th c., "Pendant Portraits of a Couple in theMercer-Patton Families", oil on canvas, giltwood frame, each 28.25in.x 24 in., together with an American gold, seed pearl and garnet floral pin, c. 1810-1830. E10000/15000 These unique and elegant paintings depict a husband and wife, or a bethrothed couple. As an expression of their devotion to each other, both of the sitters wear the same gold, seed pearl and garnet floral pin. The pin in the portraits is offered as a part of the sale with the paintings. Provenance: Descended in a prominent Virginia family to the Estate of Marion Patton Atkinson, New Orleans. The sitters are possibly the great-grandparents, John Mercer Patton (1797-1858) and Peggy French Williams (1804-1873) of Marion Patton Atkinson (1902-2000)
