Description:

American School, early 19th c., "Portrait of James Ramsey Boyce of Virginia as a Child", oil on canvas, unsigned, 30 in. x 25 in., in an antique frame. E3000-5000 Note: According to family history this portrait was painted in 1833. The artist was originally commissioned to paint the sister of the sitter and he had begun the preliminary work on her portrait. However, she passed away and the boy's portrait was painted instead. You can still discern the bonnet and larger sleeves that were part of his sister's portrait, but then painted over with depiction of the son.
