Description:

American School, early 19th c., "The Progress of a Potentate (Perhaps a Fragment)", oil on canvas affixed to board, faintly signed lower right, 24 1/2 in. x 25 1/2 in., 62 x 65 cm., in a c. 1825 giltwood frame.

  • Notes: Note: The style is that of a distant follower of Raphael, characteristic of the early- to middle-19th century. The curious shape of the picture, and the way the leading figure's arm and baton are incomplete may suggest either a study or reduction. The identity of the central figure -- whose immediate attendants seem high-spirited, yet of whom the bystanders seem filled with sorrow and obsequiousness -- indicates a divided triumph.
