American School, late 18th/early 19th c., "Naval Officer, possibly John Barry (1745-1803), Father of the American Navy", gouache on paper, unsigned, inscribed "Where Florida long extended around you-And St. Mary-roll in grandeur to the sea" in ink en verso, 6 1/2 in. x 5 in., in a period giltwood frame, églomisé mat.
- Notes: Note: Commodore John Barry, born in Ireland in 1745, worked in his adopted country to help develop the United States Navy, and was often called the "Father" of that Navy by his contemporaries. His many naval victories, including those off the coast of Newfoundland and off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War. He was honored by President George Washington in 1797 and given the honorary title Commodore.
