Lot 408
American School, late 19th c., "The Paddle Steamer 'Challenge'", oil on canvas, 16 in. x 36 in., in a walnut frame. E12000-18000 Note: There are two published reports of river steamers called "Challenge". One of these was torn from its moorings in St. Louis by ice floes in 1856; the other, a double sternwheel packet, was primarily a freight boat, active from 1854 until lost at St. Louis, apparently in 1860. As this boat is a side-wheel passenger vessel flying a 35-star flag (used from 1863-1864), the painting, perhaps more possibly could be an artist's rendering of the romantic era of steamboat travel.
