American School, 19th c., "David Alexander Bokee (1805-1860)", oil on canvas, unsigned, script label en verso identifying the sitter, 30 1/4 in. x 25 in., original frame.
Note: Born in New York in 1805, Bokee moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, in the early 1820s to expand his burgeoning mercantile career. There he married and had six children before returning to New York in 1834. He served as New York State Senator and was elected to the US Congress as a Whig in 1848. Through his Whig ties President Millard Fillmore appointed him the Naval Officer of Customs for the Port of New York in 1851.
