Description:

An Aesthetic Pine, Walnut and Minton Tile Shipping Trunk, late 19th c., labeled in script on lid "General D. Butterfield, Albany Building, Corner 51st and Broadway, New York City, from S. Dering, Utica; lift-top lid, void interior, paneled sides inset with large Minton tiles, reeded corners, blocked feet, casters, height 22 in., width 51 in., depth 24 in.

  • Notes: Note: Union Major General Daniel Butterfield was wounded at Gettysburg and Gaines Mill, and was awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for his service at Gaines Mill. A special bugle call he composed for his brigade is thought to possibly be the origination of "Taps". He was also notorious, as Hooker's chief of staff, for maintaining a headquarters described as a "combination of a bar and a brothel". Butterfield is buried in one of the most ornate monuments of the West Point Cemetery.
