Description:

An American Aesthetic Carved Giltwood Fire Screen in the Japonesque Taste, late 19th c., pierced and incised frame with brackets, scrolled legs, paw feet, retaining original painted panel depicting an allegory of Winter in the manner of Dora Wheeler, height 44 in., width 31 1/2 in.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: De-accessioned from the Strong Museum, Rochester, NY, to the present owner. Note: The fine draftsmanship and mythological subject matter of the painted canvas panel in this screen is in the manner of Dora Wheeler (1857-1940), noted student and model for William Merritt Chase and daughter of interior decorating authority Candace Wheeler. Known for her portraits and textile designs for Associated Artists, Dora Wheeler also developed a technique for "needlewoven tapestry", where stitches on a silk panel have the appearance of a woven tapestry and the modulation of a painting.
