An American Aesthetic Carved Rosewood Sofa, late 19th c., attributed to Herter Bros., New York, the back having a pierced foliate and relief carved paneled crest with intricate floral sprays, sunflower carved stiles and arms, a conforming seat rail, raised on blocked paneled tapered square legs connected by stretchers, height 43 in., width 64.5in., depth 20.5in. Note: The organically executed carved decoration and the use of the aesthetic sunflower motif seen in this example are indicative of a New York firm working in high style design and craftsmanship such as Herter Bros.
