An American Aesthetic Cherrywood and Rosewood Inlaid Two-Piece Bedroom Suite, c. 1880, New York, attributed to Herter Bros., comprised of a mirrored dressing case and a reticulated panel bed, each distinctively decorated with a fanciful bird and flowering vines the dressing case containing a bevelled mirror flanked by tiered stacks of four graduated drawers, dresser: height 100in., width 59in. bed: height 56.5in., width 54in. E6000-8000 Note: The dressing case retains an old inscription in pencil which reads "Mr. Chapman's Dressing Case". The Herter Bros. firm was known to have clients in Chicago by the name of Chapman. The present pieces exhibit the exceptional craftsmanship for which the Herter Brothers firm is renowned. The rear of the dressing case uses the frame and panel construction typical of the firm as illustrated in Howe, Frelinghuysen, Voorsanger et al, Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, pg. 110, fig. 91 The drawer construction is further basis for a Herter Brothers attribution as no liners separate the drawers, and the front and sides are joined with narrow waisted, tight fitting dovetails of the sort only highly skilled workers could execute ibid, pg. I 1 1, fig. 95
