E3500/4500 Note: The lock plate is stamped "G. BAYER PAT. FEB 6, 1872/NY". The Herter firm is known to have frequently used Bayer locks. A comparison of the paneling used on the rear of the presently offered piece to that of catalogue no. 82, Howe et al, Herter Brothers, Furniture and Interiors for a Gilded Age, reveals marked similarities (see figs. 89 and 90, pg. 109). In addition, the marquetry inlay on the door panels of this piece is unquestionably related to that of catalogue no. 22, ibid, having characteristic organic quality.
