Description:

An American Aesthetic Polychromed Cast Iron Fireplace Mantel, late 19th c., the slate top over foliate and geometric paint-decorated panels centered by a palmetto leaf above a turning sided by finials and with pendant drops, the landscape-painted pilasters headed by rectangles ornamented with aesthetic foliate decor, height 52 in., width 62.5in., depth 21 in. E1500/2500 Note: The design of this mantel can be traced to Charles Locke Eastlake, author of Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details, c. 1868. Possibly the most influential art book of its time published in American and England, it promoted good design coupled with fine materials. A line drawing of a cast iron mantel by J.L. Mott Iron Work, New York, which is very similar in form to this lot, is illustrated in Pursuit of Beauty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, ill. 821, page 286.
