A desk bearing the Horner label with legs and feet also identical to those seen here is conserved by the High Museum of Art (acc.1993.142.1) Introduced to Americans by French and English designers at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, the Japanese aesthetic greatly influenced late 19th-century American design. American furniture in the Japonesque taste was produced by New York firms such as that of Robert J. Horner, established in 1886 on East 23rd St eet. The 1888 Horner publication Our American Homes and How to Furnish Them recommends for bedrooms, "If there is an absence of sunshine, a lighter wood is preferable..." clearly maple furniture like the dressing table here met this requirement.
