An American Carved Mahogany Secretary Bookcase, c. 1840, New York, flared cornice, glazed doors, projecting drawers and marble top over molded frieze drawer fitted with writing surface, cupboard doors below, scrolled feet, height 90 5/8 in., width 41 3/4 in., depth 20 7/8 in.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: Thimbleton, 221 West Tuscaloosa Street, Florence, Alabama, the historic home of Edward Asbury O'Neal (1818-1890), governor of Alabama (1882-1886). O'Neal graduated with honors from La Grange College and practiced law in Huntsville and Florence in the 1840s. A leading advocate of Secession, O'Neal served as a colonel in the Confederate Army and commanded the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment. O'Neal was commissioned brigadier general later in the war. After O'Neal returned to Florence, he became active in Alabama politics. His son, Emmet (1853-1922), also served as governor of Alabama (1911-1915).
