An American Carved Oak 'House of Representatives' Desk, c. 1857, Joseph Doe and Eastman Hazleton, Boston, after a design by Thomas U. Walter, the gallery crested with a Federal stars and strips shield over a slanted writing surface and pen compartment, the drawered frieze on scrolling brackets and cartouche carved supports with lattice backboard, stretcher shelf and trestle base, height 25 in., width 29 in., depth 21 in. E10000-15000 Note: Used in the House chamber until 1872, these desks were given or sold to Congressmen and replaced with smaller models. A desk and chairs (such as the following two lots) from the group are illustrated in Frank Leslie's Illustrated News , vol. 19 no. 486, depicting the Jan 31, 1865 announcement of the 13th Constitutional Amendment abolishing slavery.
