An American Carved Oak "House of Representatives" Armchair, c. 1857, stamped "Bembe & Kimbel, New York", after a design by Thomas Ustick Walter, shield and oak leaf crest, leaf-carved stiles, padded scrolled arms, guilloche-carved rounded seat rail, bulbous leaf and star-carved legs, on casters, retaining original oil cloth covered back and one original armrest pad, height 40 1/4 in., width 24 1/8 in., depth 22 1/8 in. ?

  • Notes: Note: The designer of this chair, Thomas Ustick Walter (1804-1887), architect of the U.S. Capitol, was responsible for the interiors of the House of Representatives wing. The chairs were in use from 1857 to 1873 when remodeling resulted in the sale of Walter's furnishings.
