Lot 819
An American Carved Oak Tall Case Clock, early 20th c., attributed to Tobey Furniture Co., Chicago, with silvered brass dial marked Tiffany & Co., movement probably made by J.J. Elliott, Ltd. of London, with applied brass Arabic numerals on chapter ring, silvered seconds dial, tombstone top with engraved hemispheres, and painted moonphase dial with English cottage and ship scenes (inscribed 5700); 2-weight driven brass movement; the case with a grotesque mask crest on the arched bonnet; pipers flanking the hood door, and putto terms on the waist, bas relief tavern scene panel on the base, bun feet, back stenciled "1168", height 102 in., width 27 5/8 in., depth 17 3/8 in.
- Notes: Note: In 1905 Tobey Furniture Company of Chicago opened a showroom on New York's West Thirty Second Street, near Fifth Avenue. This New York foothold not only was a venue for "Tobey Handmade Furniture" on the east coast, but likely facilitated exchanges between the Tobey workshops in Chicago run by Joseph Twymen from 1898-1904 and those of New York's furniture maker R. J. Horner and retailer Tiffany and Co. Indeed, Tobey supplied an Atlas motif oak dining suite for the Montana Governor's Mansion that recalls many known suites by Horner. (see Darling, Chicago Furniture, Art Craft and Industry 1833-1983, p. 193) Though the case on this clock is likely made entirely by Tobey Furniture Co., some carved elements are similar to those produced by Horner as well. Scholar Tran Duy Ly notes that Tobey was known to use moments manufactured by J.J. Elliot and Company of London, a supplier of movements to many clocks retailed by Tiffany and Co. Reference: A nearly identical clock reproduced from the Tobey Catalogue and referred to as a "Flemish" clock is illustrated in Duy Ly, Longcase Clocks and Standing Regulators, Part I, Machine Made Clocks. p. 422, fig. 979.
