Description:

An American Carved Walnut Hanging Corner Cupboard, late 19th c., probably Cincinnati School of Design, the door with stylized morning glories carved on a punchwork ground, shaped foliate skirt with a central monogram, height 46in., width 23in., depth 20in. E500-750 Note: This cupboard embodies the theory of design espoused by Benn Pitman, who wrote in 1895 in A Plea For American Decorative Art that acceptable adornment could be understood as "the correct and appropriate representation of the facts and forms of nature, combined with the intelligent employment of the decorative forms bequeathed to us by the art workers of the past... The all pervading lesson of nature seems to be, that the useful should be made beautiful."
