An American Cherrywood and Cypress Armoire, c. 1785, a stepped cornice above panelled doors enclosing a medial two-drawer belt, also concealing two small secret drawers, and three shelves, on bracket feet of later date, period hardware, height 87 1/2in., width 45 1/2in. depth 18.5in. E25000-35000 Note: To the present consignor from an Opelousas collection. Interestingly an inside door panel has a partial baptismal certificate of Cesaire Carruthers, and other family documents. Messr. Carruthers mother was from the early St. Landry Parish Nereaux family. An armoire with similar door panels is illustrated in Early Furniture of Louisiana 1750-1830, pp. 9, Louisiana State Museum, Jesse Poesch.
