An American Chippendale Carved Walnut Sidechair, c. 1760-1780, Pennsylvania, the carved crestrail centering a scalloped shell with tassellated carving to each side, the fluted stiles centering a gothicized splat, conforming centered shell on seat rail, cabriole front legs ending in ball and claw feet. E3000-5000 Provenance: Kuntz Collection, purchased by Emile Kuntz and by correspondence identified as having descended in the family of Pennsylvania's first governor under the Constitution, Major General Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800), Washington's aide de camp, during the Revolutionary War. A watercolor portrait of Thomas Mifflin acquired by the family at the same time as the present chair is in the Kuntz Collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art.
