Description:

An American Chippendale Reverse Serpentine Cherrywood Chest of Drawers, c. 1790, Connecticut River Valley, Massachusetts, the shaped bull-nose edge top over a conforming case with blocked, molded drawers with blocked ends, flanked by stiles carved with vine and berry clusters on conforming blocked ogee bracket feet, white pine secondary wood, height 37 in., width 40 in., depth 19 3/4 in. E60000- 80000 Note: The termination of the drawer fronts to conform to the flat stiles and the continuation of this transition down into the plinth and with an everted flange on the bracket foot found in this chest are typical of other Connecticut River Valley case pieces, many associated with the workshop of Eliphalet Chapin (1741-1807) and illustrated in Thomas and Alice Kugelman Connecticut Valley Furniture, Eliphalet Chapin and his Contemporaries p. 168, pl. 70; p. 169, pl. 71 p. 252, pl. 114; p. 318, pl. 145. The bold meandering vine decoration carved on the stiles of this chest reflects a motif often used in rural Connecticut River Valley furniture, architectural elements and grave markers. (see William Hosley, Regional Furniture, Regional Life) A similar reverse-serpentine front chest attributed to George Belden Hartford) with bracket feet conforming to the blocked drawer ends as the example above is illustrated in the Wadsworth Atheneum Catalog, 1967, Connecticut Furniture, 17th and 18th Centuries, figures 66 and 161 and also in Elizabeth R. Daniel's advertisement in Magazine Antiques, March 1969, p. 331. A cherrywood chest from the collection of Alice and Murray Braunfeld with closely related carved stiles, drawer ends and feet was sold as lot 1190, Sotheby's, New York, January 17, 2004.
