Description:

An American Classical Carved Mahogany Dressing Table, c. 1830, the ogee mirror flanked by tapered columns fitted with gilt bronze candle arms, the base with glove drawers and bolection molded drawers fitted with lion's mask pulls, resting on an acanthus-carved standard ending in bold acanthus-carved scroll legs and paw feet, height 80 in., width 36.5in. , depth 23.5in. E3000-5000 Note: Large architectonic dressing tables such as lot 389 are rare and were typically found in wealthy households. The boldly carved acanthine base is indicative of New York City's high style in the 1820's. A center table with nearly identical carved legs is part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Reference: Marilynn Johnson, Nineteenth Century America Furniture and Other Decorative Arts, pl. 53.
