Lot 127
Description:
An American Classical Carved Mahogany Games Table, c. 1833-1837, Philadelphia, with paper label of retailer, David Fleetwood, 95 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, and an incised signature of Thomas Roberts; foldover swivel top, molded and gadrooned apron, the stem with acanthus and anthemion carving, incurvate plinth, foliate-carved paw feet, casters, height 31 in., width 36 in., depth 18 in.
- Notes: Note: The gadrooned molding, carved support and winged paw feet on this table are among many design elements associated with Philadelphia makers. Notably, the acanthus carving on the stem is inverted from the usual "water spout" seen in most other Philadelphia Classical tables. Another example of an inverted water spout occurs in a table bearing the label of Charles White, operating at 109 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, very close to 95 Walnut Street, the address indicated on the Fleetwood label seen here. Reference: The White table is illustrated in Boor. Philadelphia Empire Furniture. p. 139, pl. 278.
