Description:

An American Classical Carved Mahogany Library Armchair, early 19th c., attributed to Duncan Phyfe & Son, shaped crest rail, tall scrolled padded back, padded arms on lappet carved scrolled supports, turned legs, casters stamped "A. Thorp".

  • Notes: Note: The shaped back and arm supports on this chair are nearly identical to those on a chair made by Duncan Phyfe for John Jacob Astor. Thorpe casters, as seen on this armchair, appear on examples from the Phyfe workshop, notably on a bedside stand made for daughter Eliza and a library armchair conserved by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
