Lot 152
An American Classical Carved Mahogany Pier Table, early 19th c., New York, white marble top, straight frieze, bronze collared columns, cylindrical stretchers, acanthine lobed feet, height 34 3/4 in., width 41 1/2 in., depth 19 in Note: A precedent of columnar supports and conforming stretchers on early 19th-century New York furniture can be seen in the designs of Charles-Honore Lannuier and Duncan Phyfe. As early as 1817, Lannuier's lyre based worktable incorporates these design features. Phyfe in 1820 echoes the same columnar elements, in bolder fashion, on a games table. These elements continue in Phyfe's late work evinced in a games table from the Kelley Collection. Reference: Kenny, et. al.
