An American Classical Carved Mahogany Settee, early 19th c., Boston, rectangular upholstered back, rounded arms, arched foliate and volute terminals, reeded seat rail, volute blocked feet, casters, height 34 in., width 60 in., depth 28 in.
- Notes: Note: This settee, with its rectilinear form and boldly carved embellishments, is part of a well-known group of Boston seat furniture influenced by English designers Michelangelo Anderson, Peter Nicholson and Thomas King. A number of seating examples by Boston makers, also using the bold juxtaposition of box form and carved surface seen here, are illustrated in Talbot. "Seating Furniture in Boston, 1810-1835", Magazine Antiques (May 1991), pl. X, XXII, XXV, see also a mahogany sofa sold in these rooms as lot 197 on July 15, 1995 and a mahogany sofa sold as lot 91 on February 23, 2008.
