Lot 385
Description:
An American Classical Gilt Stenciled and Verte-Antique Mahogany Pier Table, c. 1830, incised maker's stamp of William Alexander (Sharpburgh, Pennsylvania, wc. 1826-1835), the original white marble top above an ogee molded apron with stenciled corners and foliate panel, columnar supports with anthemion carved capitals, the mirrored back flanked by tapered gadrooned pilasters, incurvate demilune plinth with stenciled leaf border and anthemion sunburst, lobed disc feet, height 35 in., width 41 in., depth 21 1/2 in.
- Notes: Note: An accomplished carver and pianoforte maker, William Alexander was listed in the suburb of Sharpburg in Pittsburgh city directories from 1837 to 1844 The gadrooned pilaster moldings and shaped plinth on this pier table show Alexander was well acquainted with Philadelphia high style furniture, particularly that of Anthony Quervelle (Philadelphia, 1789-1856). Alexander likely apprenticed in Philadelphia or at least was heavily influenced by the 1828 publication of The Philadelph a Cabinet and Chair Makers' Union Book of Prices. A sideboard also bearing William Alexander's stamp, from the collection of David Conrad Hislop and exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, has carved capitals and columns identical to those on this lot.
