An American Classical Mahogany and Gilt Stenciled Brass Coffer, early 19th c., the sarcophagus form ornamented with foliate volutes and fleur-de-lis framing the initials "M.A.W." in gilt cursive, the interior lined in bright orange paper, on gilt brass winged paw feet, height 6 1/2 in., width 11 in., depth 7 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: Stencil decorated coffers similar to that offered here are conserved in the collections of Winterthur. This box was probably intended for a lady's dressing table and bears the original owner's initials. A known group of Philadelphia painted furniture conserved by Winterthur came from the Walm and Van Sickle family members.
