  • Notes: Note: Apprenticed to the German-American cabinet makers Kreig and Dohrman in New York between 1845 and 1853 and to Charles Baudouine until 1856, Ernest Hagen formed a partnership with shopmate J. Matthew Meier in 1858 In 1867 the partners moved to 213 East 26th Street, the address indicated on the label on this chair. The firm not only specialized in bench-made reproductions of designs from fashionable decorating firms, but also refurbished and sold antiques. In a 1905 newspaper interview Hagen noted, "the ruins of irreparable damaged old pieces furnish the modern cabinetmaker with the very best seasoned mahogany." Reference: Walters. "Is it Phyfe?"
