Lot 385
An American Classical Painted and Stenciled Rosewood Center Table, c. 1820, Baltimore, the circular top with a continuous Chinoiserie landscape and fruit and leaves in reserve, blocked skirt, columnar support with urn base, incurvate triangular plinth, baluster feet, height 29 in., diameter 35 1/2 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The distinctive support for this table, with an acanthus decorated urn issuing a column, is similar to those on two tables made for Alexander Brown (1764-1834) of Baltimore and attributed to Hugh Finlay (Baltimore, fl. 1799-1840), now conserved by the Maryland Historical Society. The use of chinoiserie decoration on this table is rare; one other known American Classical center table with an Asian landscape is part of the Fountain Elms collection, conserved by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute.
