An American Ebonized and Paint-Decorated Dresser, c. 1845, Philadelphia, attributed to Hart, Ware and Co., the later cartouche form mirror and uprights upon a serpentine-outlined white and gray variegated marble top, the frieze drawer over a pair of cabinet doors gilt and polychrome decor combining birds, flowers and arabesque borders, executed on a black lacquered ground, ogee molded plinth containing blind drawer, on bun feet, height 72in., width 35.5in., depth 22in. E1800-2500 Note: The 19th c. term "Cottage Furniture" is used to describe painted pieces which generally were used as bedroom furnishings. An 1852 quote from Godey's Lady's Book cites Hart, Ware & Co as "having a most splendid display at their repository at No. 280 Chestnut St". In 1850 the noted architect and designer Alexander Jackson Downing wrote that cottage furniture is "now offered in all our principal cities of pretty form and at moderate prices." A nearly identically decorated dresser, part of a bedroom set by Hart, Ware and Co. forms part of the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
