An American Egyptian Revival Rosewood Bronze-Mounted Parlor Suite, c. 1865-1870, attributed to John Jelliff, Newark, New Jersey, comprised of a sofa, gentleman's armchair and three smaller armchairs, each crest centered by a bronze roundel of a classical bust flanked by foliate branches, circular back with burled walnut molding, shaped arms terminating in Pharaoh heads, shaped seat and turned trumpet shaped legs, sofa height 46 in., width 72 in., depth 25 in. E5000-7000 Note: The leg turning in this parlor suite is nearly identical to several examples by Jelliff conserved by the Newark Museum of Art including a suite made for the Warren Trusdell house in Newark (see Ulysses Dietz, A Century of Revivals, 19th Century American Furniture from the Collection of the Newark Museum, pl. 37-40, 43, pp, 45-51). The high-style Egyptian Revival bust arm supports and the bronze medallion at the crest of these pieces are also indicative of the Jelliff firm, though differing in form from those in the Trusdell suite. Curator William Dietz noted that while the carving and custom work varied within the firm's output, the routinely incidental detail work (such as the legs in lot 183) varied little within the shop.
