E1200-1800 Note: Introduced to Americans in the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition the Japanese aesthetic greatly influenced subsequent furniture design Most American furniture of the Japanese taste was produced by New York firms such R. J. Horner & Co. and Bauman Bros. working from French antecedents such as Victor Quentin's Le Magasin de Meubles. Aesthete Clarence Cook called the new style "capital stuff" for country house interiors in his contemporary stylebook The House Beautiful.
